How to lengthen the life of your flowers

To really get the most from your arrangement see our tips below on how to make your flowers last longer. Most flower arrangements will last between 4-7 days depending on the type of flower and how they’re cared for. Why not give them a little extra care and enjoy your flowers for longer. Here are our top tips for looking after your flowers:

• Fill a vase with water mixed with flower food.
• Do not use ice cold water, it’s best to use water at room temperature.
• Flower foods make flowers last longer but it is important to follow the mixing directions on the flower food packet - for maximum effect don’t dilute with more water than indicated.
• Before adding your flowers to the vase, trim approximately 1-2 inches from the bottom of each stem, cutting with a sharp knife at a 45 degree angle. Do not let the newly cut end dry off before transferring it back to your vase.
• Bacteria grows quickly in the water and not only will this look unsightly it’s harmful to your flowers. To avoid spoiled flowers, empty the vase every couple of days and refill with fresh water.
• Remember to re-cut the stems before you replace your flowers, ideally cutting 1-2 inches off each stem again to ensure proper absorption of the water. Make sure your knife or scissors are sharp and will cut, not crush the stems.
• Keep flowers in a cool spot, away from direct sunlight, heating or cooling vents, directly under ceiling fans, or on top of televisions or radiators. Appliances like televisions give off heat, which causes flowers to dehydrate. Most flowers will last longer under cool conditions.
• If you receive an item in oasis, ensure that the oasis foam is damp at all times. If it is dry pour water down the back of the arrangement slowly so that the water is gradually absorbed.
